Explanation:
Bit of a non-traditional post. Just gonne copypaste my review of the album from RYM.
With a name like Hannibal Lector it makes it kind of hard to search for this record. Even with the information I have now and having listened to this already I'm not really sure who he is. As far as I know he is either a rapper from Houston who was more famously known as Big Bear or a rapper from the midwest who worked with Tech N9ne in the late 90s. Having listened to it I'm still a bit torn but I think this is probably the midwest emcee though a lot of the beats have a southern tinge to them.
Despite a name like Hannibal Lector there isn't much horrorcore to be found here. Just standard hardcore gangster rap. Lots of bars about how rich he is and how you aren't to mess with him. Intersperse that with lots of dusty R&B hooks and you got a decent album. Hannibal Lector commands the beats practically riding each bar to the exact hihat. No time for the beat to breath, Lector rips every single one apart. Some tracks even have him adding in fierce flows like on the self-titled track where he's practically growling at the listener about how cool he is. It kind of reminds me of one of the emcees in Qualo. Getem Up is a good example of that simple beat but very agressive and gangster sounding flow.
The chorus of the self-titled song is great, 'they call me hannibal because i'm addicted to me'. I think it's pretty clear this guy didn't take his name from the old general. A lot of the beats are very 2000s-sounding. Beaches to Sanddunes is what I mean in that it's exactly that sound. That kind of sound that was every myspace rapper's page circa late 90s/early 20s. Lots of claps, lower-volume percussion, that lowkey but heavily used synth, and a very rhhythmic flow.
All in all, good stuff.
Reasons for Disappearance:
Plenty of rappers in the history of hip hop recorded albums, saw they weren't popping and hung it up. Or maybe they felt they had achieved all they wanted with hip hop. Or maybe other things got in their way and decisions had to be made. I don't know the reason Hannibal Lector vanished nor do I have any explanation as to why.
